Meet Dorothy, Landon, and Bella!
In 2021, Dorothy Thornal lost her job when the assisted living center where she worked burned down. She began volunteering with Freedom Readers at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Andrews, SC, where she quickly bonded with site leader Geneva Coleman.
Soon after, Dorothy’s son took in four young children after their mother passed away. Her new granddaughter, Bella, was struggling in school, so Dorothy encouraged her to join Freedom Readers in Fall 2022. Bella thrived, inspiring her younger brother, Landon, to try the program. Initially too shy and not yet in school, Landon quit after a few sessions, but after seeing Bella confidently read at the Red Carpet Awards in April 2024, he rejoined that summer before Kindergarten. Since then, his storytelling skills and confidence have soared, impressing both his teacher and family.
Dorothy has witnessed the program’s impact firsthand, especially in Bella. With her tutor Patricia’s support, Bella has gained confidence and made friends. Dorothy believes Freedom Readers gives children, especially those facing challenges, the encouragement they need to succeed.
Now, Bella and Landon’s younger sister is eager to join when she is old enough. This family has embraced the magic of reading, and we look forward to seeing them continue to grow with Freedom Readers!
