Freedom Readers strives to teach its scholar about the real world by having themes that relate to their lives. Over the summer, the theme of the Summer Olympics may have seemed far away in Paris, France, but they learned that Olympians come from all over the US, and even from their own areas, such as Georgetown County! Olympian Melissa Jefferson grew up in Hemingway, SC, and attended Coastal Carolina University. She competed in the 2024 summer olympics and won gold in the 4×100 m relay and won bronze in the 100 m.
On October 12th, Georgetown designated the day to be Melissa Jefferson Day and hosted a parade in her honor. A group of Freedom Readers scholars and tutors from Southern Georgetown Community Library attended the parade, got to take pictures with Melissa Jefferson, and enjoyed all of the festivities of the day! It was a wonderful experience for this Freedom Readers group to see someone who grew up there compete and be recognized on an international scale!
